Caldy 31 Bromsgrove 13
RELEGATION battling Bromsgrove suffered another frustrating near miss in the National North Two on Saturday.
The Boars were pushing for a much-needed win in the Wirral when the game changed in the space of a few minutes.
With the scores 17-13 to the hosts, Aaron Higgins was denied a try by a last-ditch tackle, before the hosts killed the game off with a touch down of their own.
Defeat means second from bottom Bromsgrove are still 13 points away from safety with eight games of the campaign left.
Bromsgrove had recovered well from a disastrous start when they conceded two tries in the first first ten minutes by Gavin Roberts.
Caldy should have built on that lead as they were getting a fair share of possession against Bromsgrove’s pack, as the visiting forwards suffered an off day.
It wasn’t until the final 10 minutes of the first half that Town started to get into the game and were rewarded with a Richard Mahony penalty.
Two minutes later against the run of play, Town created some turnover ball which Higgins pounced on to score a 60 metre try.
Mahony’s conversion leveled the scores for half-time.
Caldy started the half the stronger but Town held firm until the 50th minute when a simple inside pass gave Roberts his hat-trick.
Bromsgrove came back into the game and a second Mahony penalty put them within one score of their hosts.
The visitors continued to apply pressure but the course of the game changed when Higgins, pouncing on a pass by Mahony, was denied and Roberts responded by completing his hat-trick.
Caldy rubbed salt in the wound with a fifth try at the death from second row Ben Jones.
Bromsgrove take on Preston Grasshoppers at home on Saturday, March 1 (2.15pm ko).
